The Sapphire Coast is part of Australia’s Coastal Wilderness and is one of the best accessible Wilderness Coasts in Australia. It stretches from the far South Coast of NSW to East Gippsland in VIC and is where tall forests, lakes and beaches meet.

A few ideas for you to enjoy the unspoilt Australian Coastal Wilderness:

1. Trek

Hike through the wilderness on the designated walking tracks and camp along the wild, empty coastlines. National Parks and State Forests allow visitors to experience the majesty of unspoilt forests and coastlines and the incredible array of birds and wildlife.

2. Wildlife

Birds, whales, seals and other marine life abound in the rich waters and the forests are home to spectacular parrots, honeyeaters and kangaroos. Venture out after dark to find some of our secretive nocturnal mammals such as possums and owls.

3. Marine life

Spot whales, dolphins, seals and penguins. The Continental Shelf is only 20km offshore in places providing spectacular big game fish including marlin and yellow fin tuna. Our coastline is a hotspot for whale activity with up to 16 different whale species through the year. The annual southern migration of humpback whales from October to December draws visitors from across the globe.

4. Dine on freshly-caught seafood

Fresh seafood abounds along this coastline where you’ll find top-quality seafood restaurants and outlets. Hunt for tuna and marlin on a deep sea fishing charter and feast on fresh oysters. The scenic coastal road between Tathra and Bermagui is dotted with cafes and gourmet outlets as well as wineries and art galleries.

5. Trace the area’s Aboriginal history

Spot ancient midden sites and discover relics like shells, stones, bones and campfire charcoal scattered on walking tracks in the National Parks. Learn about the crucial role that Aboriginal people played in the local whaling industry.
